World War IIDS Blenheim

The Norwegian DS Blenheim was en route from Hammerfest to Porsanger on 22 April 1941, carrying a large number of German SS troops and vehicles. The vessel caught fire southeast of Repvågneset. The crew attempted to beach the ship, but all on board were forced to abandon ship or jump into the sea due to the intense flames, leading to many deaths by drowning. The abandoned vessel drifted, still burning, across the fjord to the eastern shore and ran aground at Brenna, where it burned out completely. The wreck later ended up in Andersbukta, where it remained for several years after the war. The fire was likely caused by careless handling of open flames. A total of 104 people perished in the disaster, including eight members of the Norwegian crew.
