World War IIDS Bolette
The Norwegian DS Bolette was sailing in convoy from Milford Haven to Devonport, carrying a cargo of coal. On 16 April 1941, the vessel was attacked by German aircraft off St. Ives near Land’s End. Two bombs struck the ship—one just aft of the bridge and one on the poop deck—causing a fire in one of the holds. One of the lifeboats was launched, but before it could clear the ship, DS Bolette capsized. Some of the crew managed to climb onto the overturned lifeboat, while others swam to a raft that had floated free. These men were quickly rescued by an escort vessel. Eight lives were lost in the sinking.
