World War IIMS Brand
MV Brand joined a convoy on its journey from Halifax to Great Britain. The convoy sailed for 20 days through thick fog and Brand lost contact with the convoy. On the 12th of May 1942, the vessel was torpedoed by the German uboat U-603 in the position 4719N, 2441W, and sank within seven minutes. The crew lowered three boats down to the sea, but many had to take the plunge and jump overboard before the ship would sink. After an investigation of the wreckage, the three lifeboats set sail for Ireland, but on the same day they were observed by an airplane. Early next morning, 30 survivors were brought on board in a corvette. Two norwegian sailors and one Royal Navy Gunner perished in the sinking.
