World War IIDS Bris

SS Bris was on a journey from Baltimore to Brazil loaded with asphalt and flour. This vessel was torpedoed on the 20th of April 1942 by a German uboat U-201 in position 3334N, 3935W. The crew managed to lower down a lifeboat, but due to space limitations many had to swim. After a while they managed to find a raft and the people which were swimming boarded them. The reserve lifeboat was found capsized the day after, but luckily enough it was unharmed and 14 men boarded this boat. A storm hit the two lifeboats and they got separated. The reserve lifeboat capsized three times and lost its equipment and the food stored. But on the 2nd of May the reserve lifeboat were spotted by an allied airplane and the day after just 5 nautical miles from Cape Fear, the 14 crew members were rescued by a tanker. It was on this ship that the 3. Engineer died the same day. The other lifeboat with 13 passengers reached Paris Island on the 4th of May. Three men perished in the sinking.
