World War IIDS Cadmus
The DS Cadmus was en route from Tela, Honduras, to Galveston with bananas when it was torpedoed on 1 July 1942 by the German U-boat U-129 at position 22°50’N and 92°15’W. The crew took to the lifeboats and managed to clear the ship before Cadmus sank. The U-boat surfaced, asked for identification, and then allowed the lifeboats to sail away. The lifeboat journey took five days before they reached the Mexican coast between Tampico and Veracruz. Two men perished in the sinking.
