World War IISS Columbine
The South African SS Colombine (formerly the Thai Suruptay Nava) was torpedoed on June 16, 1944, by the German U-boat U-198, approximately 100 nautical miles off the coast of South Africa. The vessel was en route from the Congo River and Luanda to Table Bay with timber. Twenty-three people lost their lives in the sinking, and 29 were rescued.
