World War IIDS Cubano
The Norwegian DS Cubano was torpedoed on 20 October 1940 by the German U-boat U-124 in position 57°55’N 24°57’W. Cubano was en route from England to Montreal in ballast. The vessel was struck around midnight but remained afloat until the following morning. During this time, the crew stayed in the lifeboats near the still-floating wreck. In the meantime, a storm had developed with heavy seas, and by midday it was decided to set sail. The voyage in the lifeboats proved extremely challenging in the strong storm, with breaking waves and rain squalls, but the boats managed to stay together. On 21 October, all 31 survivors were picked up by a Canadian destroyer and brought to Greenock. Two men were lost in the sinking.
