The DS Eika was torpedoed on 29 January 1940 by the German U-boat U-51. The vessel was en route from Torrevieja, Spain, to Ålesund with a cargo of salt. The shipping company had not received any communication from the ship after it passed Finisterre on 27 January 1940. However, on 14 February, U-51 arrived in Bremerhaven with two survivors from Eika, after having torpedoed the vessel south of Ireland. Of the 18 crew members, 16 lost their lives.
