World War IIDS Elna E.

The Norwegian DS Elna E. was en route from Cardiff to Plymouth with a cargo of coal when, on 16 March 1941, a mine exploded beneath the forepart of the vessel off Crackington Haven. Seawater and coal were thrown across the ship, the hull was lifted high into the air, and the vessel immediately began taking on water. The lifeboats set course for shore and reached Crackington Haven later that morning. One man was caught in the suction and lost his life.
