World War IIDS Erviken
DS Erviken was on a journey in convoy from Tampa to Liverpool, carrying 9300 tons of phosphate. On its way to its destination, the convoy was attacked by several German uboats. On the 16th of October 1941 Erviken was sunk by the German uboat U-553 in the position 54N, 27W. A torpedo hit the ship’s bridge and it sunk within a minute. 19 Norwegians, five Brits and a Dane perished in the sinking, while 14 men managed to board rafts and wreckage. The survivors drifted around for three hours until they were picked up by a corvette.
