World War IIDS Fagerheim
The DS Fagerheim was torpedoed on 14 January 1940 by the German U-boat U-44. The vessel broke in two and sank within a short time. A raft and a lifeboat were launched, and eyewitnesses later reported that the following individuals were on the raft: the captain, the mess boy, the first engineer, sailor Bjarne Karlsen, the steward, and the cook.
During the first night, the first engineer and the cook passed away. The next day, the survivors were rescued by the Greek ship Iris and brought ashore in Vigo, Spain. A total of 15 men lost their lives in the sinking.
