World War IIDS Fjordheim
SS Fjordheim was en route in convoy from Swansea to Halifax with coal. On September 2, 1944, she was torpedoed by the German U-boat U-482 at position 55°20’N and 09°58’W. The torpedo struck the stern, blowing open the hatches, and a massive column of water and coal surged up, flooding the deck. As the last lifeboat was launched, the sea washed over the poop deck. Six minutes after the torpedoing, the boilers exploded, and the ship sank immediately. Three members of the engine crew perished in the sinking.
