World War IIDS Fredville

The DS Fredville was en route in ballast from Drammen to Methil to load coal for Oslo when it was torpedoed on 11 January 1940 by the German U-boat U-23 in the North Sea. The forward section of the vessel remained afloat until the next day, and crew members from the lifeboats boarded it several times in search of survivors.

The ship had a crew of 16. Five men were rescued and brought to Kopervik by a Swedish vessel, while 11 perished in the sinking.
