World War IIDS Galatea
On the 21st of January 1945, the DS Galatea was torpedoed by the German uboat U-1051 in the St. Georges Channel outside of Bardsey Island. The torpedo struck the starboard foredeck, which caused the Galatea to quickly sink with the bow face first. One of the stokers jumped overboard and saw no one else of the crew. The stoker climbed onto a draft and watched as the Galatea sunk. Six hours later he was the only surviving crew member and was picked up by an escort ship. 20 men perished in the sinking.
