World War IIDS Gunvor
The DS Gunvor was loaded with cars, tractors, and mail when it was mined off Key West in the Florida Straits. The U.S. Navy had laid a large minefield from Boca Grande, 45 nautical miles north and east of the Florida Keys, to protect against enemy submarines. However, for merchant ships, navigating through this minefield was almost as dangerous. On 14 June 1942, Gunvor struck a mine in the same minefield. Two men in the engine room perished, and the captain suffered severe injuries. Twenty men managed to escape in the lifeboat.
