World War IIDS Hai Tung
SS Hai Tung was on a journey from Bangkok to Singapore with rice and general cargo. This vessel disappeared suddenly, but later information has surfaced that the ship was torpedoed by the Japanese U-boat I-156 outside Khota Baru on December 11th 1941, close to Japan’s southernmost landing point on the Malakka peninsula. 6 Norwegians and 44 Chinese sailors perished in the sinking.
Ship master Martin Emil Hansen died of disease on 14 March 1941, before the sinking.
