World War IIDS Hero
SS Hero was on a journey from Beirut to Port Said in ballast. At the 6th of July in 1942 the ship was torpedoed by the German uboat U-375 close to land at the at 32.23 latitude and 34.35 longitude. Two torpedoes destroyed the ship completely, and the ship sunk immediately. Only the 14 sailors who was on deck survived by jumping into the water. The survivors were then picked up by an escorting ship which brought the sailors to a hospital in Jaffa. Four Norwegians, two Britons and 24 Chinese sailors perished in the sinking. The wreck was raised in 1944 and broken up.
