World War IIDS Inga I

The DS Inga I was en route in convoy from Oban to Gibraltar with 1,670 tons of coal and coke. The convoy was spotted by German aircraft, and for several days, the ships were kept under observation by German planes. On 26 July 1941, the U-boats struck, and on the following day, 27 July, Inga I was hit by a torpedo from the German U-boat U-126. The ship rolled over and sank within two minutes. Time was critical. The lifeboat ropes were quickly cut, and the entire crew was thrown into the sea, clinging to wreckage and rafts to avoid being dragged down by the ship’s sinking. The survivors were picked up by an escort vessel half an hour later. Three men perished in the sinking.
