World War IIDS Inger Elisabeth

SS Inger Elisabeth was on a journey from Sydney,N.S. to Port Alfred carrying 3500 tons of coal. On the 15th of September 1942, the vessel was torpedoed by a the German uboat U-517, only four-five nautical miles from shore by Cape Rossier in the St. Lawrence Bay. The vessel went over, but the crew managed to successfully ready a lifeboat and a workboat. These two managed to save the crew that had jumped overboard to the sea. The vessel sunk within five minutes and the survivors were able to row to nearby shore. Two Norwegians and an Irishman perished in the sinking.
