DS Ingerto var på reise i konvoi fra Clyde for Mobile i ballast. I henhold til konvoiinstruksen forlot skipet konvoien 11. mars 1942. Den 12 mars ble Ingerto torpedert av den tyske ubåten U-578 i omtrentlig posisjon 41N og 51W. Hele mannskapet på 32 omkom i forliset, inkludert 23 nordmenn.
SS Ingerto was on a journey as convoy from Clyde to Mobile in ballast. On the 11th of March 1942, in accordance to the convoy instructions, the ship left the convoy. On the 12th of March the ship was torpedoed by the German uboat U-578 in the probable position of 41N, 51W. All of the 32 crew members, including 23 Norwegians perished in the sinking.
