World War IIDS Ingøy
The Norwegian DS Ingøy (formerly Kong Eystein) operated on the coastal express route between Hammerfest, Havøysund, Honningsvåg, and Porsanger. On 30 January 1942, near Måsøya, the vessel struck a mine laid by the Soviet U-boat K-23. Those on board felt a violent jolt followed by a powerful explosion. Both lifeboats had disappeared, and the people on board were forced to jump into the sea. The vessel sank immediately. Fourteen crew members, along with a pilot and a postal clerk, were lost in the sinking. Six people were rescued.
