World War IIDS Keret

SS Keret was on a journey in convoy from Methil Road to Sydney, Nova Scotia, in ballast. The convoy was disbanded and on the 22nd of August 1940 Keret was torpedoed by the German uboat U-37 in the position 5416N, 2308W.  The ship sunk within two minutes, due to the prow breaking and disappeared into the waters. The crew managed to bring out a lifeboat, but it tipped over. Four men boarded the velvet, while three other men laid on rafts. The U-boat approached them, asked for the name of the boat and then disappeared. The survivors tipped over the lifeboat and helped the men on the rafts. The very next day the survivors were rescued and carried to Sydney, Nova Scotia. 13 men, including the whole engine crew, perished in the sinking.
