World War IDS Kong Haakon
DS Kong Haakon was sunk by gunfire on June 24, 1917, by the German U-boat UC-65 southwest of Cap Feret. The ship was part of a French convoy traveling from St. Jean de Luz to Aguelas, Spain, carrying iron ore. Twenty people lost their lives in the shipwreck. Three Norwegians and a Spaniard were later rescued by the French escort. One of the survivors, Second Engineer Olaf Thorbjørnsen, succumbed to his injuries a few months after the sinking.
