World War IIDS Kong Ring
The Norwegian DS Kong Ring was en route from Burfjord in Kvænangen to Narvik on 26 December 1941, carrying a large number of German troops. Including crew and passengers, around 300 people were on board. Near Lenangen Lighthouse in Ullsfjord, the vessel struck a mine laid by the Soviet U-boat K-1. A powerful explosion was heard, and the ship sank rapidly. There was no time to launch the lifeboats, and the cold sea claimed many lives. Of the Norwegian crew, 29 or 30 men perished; only one survived.
