World War IIDS Lysefjord

SS Lysefjord was on a journey from Tampa to Puerto Barrios with lumber, asphalt and machines in the cargo. The German uboat U-155 had dared to go into proximity of Havana harbour in Cuba. It was here on the 1st of April 1943 that Lysefjord was torpedoed. The ship sank in just under two minutes. Two men had boarded the extra life boat at the aft. This was the only boat that managed to stay straight after Lysefjord sank. The two crew members rowed around and rescued nine men, and after a while found two rafts with eight men and brought them together. 11 men set sail for Gobernadora lighthouse on Cuba which they reached after 14 hours of rowing. The people aboard the raft managed to find a capsized boat and boarded that one instead. These were later spotted by an American vessel and were brought to Tampa. Three Norwegians and a Spaniard perished in the sinking.
