World War IIDS Måkefjell
The DS Måkefjell had parts of its stern shot off by Nationalist Spanish warships in 1937. In September 1940, Måkefjell forced the German U-boat U-47 to abort an attack and dive, with six men still in the tower, who were later picked up. The ship was docked in Newcastle on 2 September 1941 when the city and harbor area were subjected to a German bombing raid, resulting in one fatality. Måkefjell served under Nortraship for the remainder of the war. The vessel ran aground off Cape Zevgari in 1976 and was scrapped in 1979.
