World War IIMS Maloja
The MS Maloja departed from a southbound convoy on 29 October 1942, heading for Takoradi, loaded with 1,000 tons of coal and 87 aircraft. The vessel was torpedoed on 8 November 1942 by the German U-boat U-128 at position 11°58’N and 27°08’W. One man in the engine room and one on deck were killed, and several others were injured. All lifeboats were successfully launched, but as Maloja was clearing the ship, the next torpedo struck and blew apart the entire stern. The ship refused to sink, and the U-boat surfaced on the opposite side of the lifeboats and opened fire on the wreck. Maloja sank in flames. The survivors were rescued the following day and taken to Freetown. Two men perished in the sinking, and one died later in the hospital from his injuries.
