World War IIDS Manx
The DS Manx (formerly Anders) was en route from West Hartlepool to Drammen with a cargo of coal when it was torpedoed on 9 January 1940 by the German U-boat U-19 in the North Sea. The vessel had a crew of 19. A powerful explosion occurred, tearing away the forecastle, and the ship sank immediately.
Eight men managed to climb onto the overturned hull of a lifeboat, but in the stormy seas and cold weather, four of them succumbed to the freezing conditions. After eight hours adrift, the remaining four were rescued by a Norwegian vessel. Two additional survivors were rescued from a raft. A total of 13 men lost their lives in the sinking.
