The Norwegian DS Marly was en route from Bombay to Cochin with a full cargo when it sailed into a cyclone on 15 October 1940 in position 18°30’N 72°10’E. The hatch covers were stove in, and the crew took to the lifeboats. Two naval vessels were dispatched from Bombay, but no trace of Marly was ever found.
