World War IIDS Narvik
The SS Narvik was on a northbound course on 22 March 1944 with a crew of 16 and nine passengers. After passing Rødøy and reaching Sleipnesodden, the vessel was attacked by the British U-boat HMS Syrtis. Eighteen people boarded a lifeboat when a shell struck the side of the ship, and 15 of the 18 people in the lifeboat were killed by shrapnel from the explosion. Three people fell into the sea from the lifeboat and were later rescued by locals who came out from Sleipnesodden. The portside lifeboat, with five crew members, was rescued and brought to Svinvær, despite having several bullet holes in the boat. The ship had a crew of 16, nine passengers, and one German soldier. Only seven crew members and two passengers survived the attack.
