World War IIDS Nidarland
The DS Nidarland was sailing alone from Buenos Aires to Baltimore, carrying 8,500 tons of zinc concentrate and 179 silver bars. On 9 November 1942, the ship was torpedoed by the German U-boat U-67 at position 11°41’N and 60°42’W. Two torpedoes struck the stern, and Nidarland sank in two minutes. A lifeboat and a raft were successfully launched, while those at the stern had to jump into the sea. All survivors eventually made it into the lifeboat. The following day, the survivors reached land on Tobago. Two men perished in the sinking.
