World War IIDS Nidarnes
The DS Nidarnes was en route from New Orleans to Cristobal with cargo for the U.S. military when it was torpedoed on 4 June 1942 in the Yucatán Channel by the German U-boat U-158. Violent explosions from the ammunition stores and oil tanks occurred, forcing the crew to jump overboard and swim away in oil-contaminated water. Thirteen Norwegians were either killed or drowned during the night. The eleven survivors managed to board a raft in the morning and were rescued the same day by an American ship, which took them to Cristobal.
