World War IDS Nitedal
DS Nitedal was torpedoed on October 20, 1917, by the German U-boat UB-57 south of Flamborough Head. The ship was en route from Yarrow to Rouen in France carrying coal. Twelve persons lost their lives in the shipwreck. Nine people were rescued by a British trawler, and the steward rowed ashore in a small boat.
