World War IIDS Norviken

SS Norviken was on a journey in ballast from Madras to Bombay. The ship was was attacked by Japanese dive bombers at the 9th of April 1942 just outside of Trincomalee. 38 men boarded the lifeboats and rowed towards the shore while being assaulted by the Japanese aircraft. When the crew reached shore they were helped by the native population and the critically wounded crew were sent to a hospital. Captain Pareli Berg and three Chinese perished away while the vessel was under the attack. Norviken was still afloat and drifted later to shore close by Timkovie. Five Norwegian officers managed to get onboard the vessel and then anchored the ship. The hull of the ship was in a horrible state. The beach police stated that pillagers were seen on the ship. One hour later the ship exploded and was engulfed in flames. Norviken burned out and broke in half.
