World War IIDS Polarland

The DS Polarland was loaded with ore off Halifax when it was torpedoed by the German U-boat U-1232 on 4 January 1945. The explosion was so devastating that the heavily laden vessel disappeared within 15 seconds. Two men managed to throw themselves onto a raft, and three others surfaced from the suction and were rescued onto the same raft. Eighteen men lost their lives in the sinking.
