World War IIDS Port Antonio
The DS Port Antonio was en route from Guatemala to Tampa with coffee when it was torpedoed on 19 July 1942 by the German U-boat U-129 at position 23°39’N and 84°00’W, approximately due west of Havana. The ship’s bottom was completely blown out, and it sank in two minutes. Eleven men made it into a lifeboat after initially being in the water. The U-boat surfaced, gave the survivors the course to Cuba, and then disappeared. On 21 July, the survivors landed at Santa Lucia. Thirteen Norwegians perished in the sinking.
