World War IIDS Primula
The DS Primula was en route in ballast from Britain to Oslo when it was torpedoed on 3 December 1939 by the German U-boat U-31 at position 57°12’N, 01°50’E. The vessel was blown in two and sank within two minutes.
The explosion destroyed two lifeboats, and the motorboat became stuck in its davits. Of the 15 crew members, eight lost their lives. The remaining seven managed to get onto a raft and were later brought to Methil, Scotland. Three of the survivors sustained minor injuries.
