World War IITS Prins Olav
The TS Prins Olav was the flagship of Nordenfjeldske Dampskibsselskab. During the conflict in 1940, the vessel served as a troop transport for the Norwegian side in Finnmark. Afterward, the ship was hidden in a fjord and painted grey. Prins Olav was then ordered to proceed to the United Kingdom. After refueling in Hammerfest, the ship set course far offshore, initially heading for Tórshavn in the Faroe Islands. On 9 June 1940, the vessel was attacked by German aircraft, and two bombs struck, setting the ship on fire. Prins Olav sank 70-80 nautical miles west of Røst, and one person was killed in the attack. The survivors were rescued by a British destroyer and brought to Scapa Flow.
