World War IIDS Proteus
The DS Proteus was docked in Batavia (Jakarta) on Java on 2 March 1942 when Allied authorities ordered that all ships in the harbor be scuttled to prevent them from falling into enemy hands. The officers carried out this somber task and then moved ashore. The crew of Proteus was later captured by the Japanese and interned until September 1945. During their captivity, 2nd Engineer Olav Larsen died in Hong Kong on 3 October 1942 from malaria, and 1st Officer Olav Nøkling died from illness on 18 December 1943.
