World War IIDS Richard With
The coastal express ship DS Richard With was torpedoed on 13 September 1941 by the British U-boat HMS Tigris south of Rolvsøya, north of Hammerfest. The vessel was en route from Honningsvåg to Hammerfest and sank within 50 seconds. The fishing cutter Skolpen, which was nearby, witnessed the sinking and arrived about 15 minutes later, but by then, there were few survivors to rescue. A total of 71 passengers and 28 crew members perished in the sinking, along with two coastal pilots. Among the many wartime shipwrecks along the Norwegian coast, this was the one that claimed the most Norwegian lives.
