World War IIDS Rinda
SS Rinda was on a journey from Haifa near Africa to UK carrying general cargo. On the 30th of May 1941, the ship was torpedoed by the German uboat U-38 outside Sierra Leone in the position 0652N, 1625W. The lifeboats were ready and the crew immediately began to lower them. There was no time to unhook the lifeboats from the wires. Suddenly, the SS Rinda tipped over and sunk within two minutes after the torpedo-attack. The crew was either washed off the deck or was pulled down alongside the lifeboats. Only a single lifeboat on the aft was ready to sail, aside the four rafts that emerged. The survivors in the lifeboats rowed to help as many as possible, in total they found 18 men. On the 1st of June, a naval vessel picked up the survivors. 22 Norwegians and one Briton perished in the sinking.
