World War IIDS Ringhorn
SS Ringhorn was on a journey in convoy from Gourock, Scotland to St. Johns N.B. loaded with 1300 tons of coal. This vessel lost its convoy in a storm on the 2nd of February 1941. On the 4th of February, in complete darkness and in rough seas, the ship was torpedoed by the German U-boat U-52 in position 5546N, 2235W. Ringhorn sank quickly. 10-12 men boarded a lifeboat, but the ship capsized before the lifeboat was ready to be lowered down into the water, the aft of the ship rose up and started to sink, this caused the chimney to capsize the lifeboat. Four men, which were wounded, managed to board a raft where they huddled up for an hour through the biting cold weather. During this hour, they heard the screams of people who were stuck in the water, they also observed a man stuck on the bottom of a capsized boat, but they were not in a position where they could help others. The four men drifted around in the ocean for six hours until they were rescued by a British Corvette and were brought to Greenrock on the 9th of February. 13 Norwegians and a Briton perished in the sinking. Three Norwegians, a Hungarian and an Estonian survived.
