World War IIDS Risøy
SS Risøy was en route in a coastal convoy from Southampton to Swansea with 450 tons of scrap iron when, on March 20, 1942, the ship was attacked twice by German aircraft. The attack occurred north of Trevose Head, where the vessel was struck by a bomb in hold number 3. Risøy sank slowly. First Engineer Sigurd Wathne was blown overboard from the boat deck and, in a severely injured state, was rescued by a nearby English ship. Wathne was brought to Swansea, where he died on March 26 in the hospital.
