World War IDS Silja
On October 17, 1917, DS Silja was sunk by the two German cruisers SMS Bremse and SMS Brummer off the coast of Shetland. The ship was part of a British convoy traveling from Grimstad to Hull, carrying props. Three individuals lost their lives in the shipwreck when the first German shell struck a crew cabin. The survivors gathered in two lifeboats and rescued 10 British sailors from the water before rowing for two days to Utvær and Holmengrå. (Sources: Sjøhistorie.no and Med norsk skib i verdenskrigen)
