World War IIDS Sirius
The SS Sirius was en route from Tromsø to Risøyhavn in May 1940, carrying hay. In Risøyhavn, the vessel was to take on vehicles for the Norwegian forces in Helgeland. On 18 May 1940, Sirius was attacked by German aircraft in Solbergfjorden, near Dyrøy. Two bombs struck the ship, splitting it in half lengthwise, causing the vessel to unfold like a book. Several crew members were forced to jump into the sea, where they were shot at by the German aircraft. Of the 19 crew members, seven were killed, and 11 were later rescued.
