World War IIDS Skottland
SS Skottland was on a journey carrying lumber destined for London through Halifax. On the 17th of May 1942, about midway between Cape Cod and Nova Scotia, the ship was torpedoed by the German uboat U-588. The explosion destroyed a lifeboat, the motor boat capsized as it was being lowered down and a man on guard duty in the boiler room got killed. Barely had 23 men made it to safety in their lifeboat when most of the ship was, within five minutes was submerged. Shortly after the lifeboat was spotted by an allied airplane. A fishing boat brought the survivors to Boston. One perished and nine were wounded in the sinking.
