World War IIDS Solferino
The Norwegian DS Solferino was sailing in convoy in the Irish Sea, bound for Freetown with 1,500 tons of coal. On 26 February 1941, the vessel was attacked by German aircraft in approximate position 55°N 15°W. The attack caused a fire amidships, and the vessel began to sink. The crew was ordered into the lifeboats. The survivors were immediately taken aboard the Swedish vessel Gdynia, where Solferino’s master died later that day from internal injuries. Gdynia arrived in Greenock on 1 March, where the survivors were brought ashore. Three men were lost in the sinking.
