World War IIDS Spind
The DS Spind (formerly Homledal) was en route in convoy from Milford Haven to Lisbon with a cargo of coal, coke, and machinery. The convoy endured heavy attacks, with seven British ships torpedoed over four days, along with two of the escort vessels. On 23 August 1941, Spind came under artillery fire from the German U-boat U-552 at position 40°43’N and 11°39’W, near Lisbon. The ship was abandoned, and later, the wreck was sunk by a British destroyer. One man was seriously injured during the sinking.
