World War IIDS Stargard
The DS Stargard was en route in convoy from Sydney, B.C., to London with timber when the convoy was attacked by several German U-boats. On 10 September 1941, Stargard was torpedoed at position 61°30’N and 40°30’W. The ship remained afloat for a while, and nine men from the wreck were rescued by the Regin, while six men in a lifeboat were picked up by the escort. Two men in the engine room perished in the direct explosion.
In November 1917, the ship had been damaged by a German torpedo but had managed to stay afloat.
