World War IIDS Steinstad
The DS Steinstad was en route from Turkey to Bjølvefossen with raw materials when, on 15 February 1940, it was stopped by the German U-boat U-26 off the Irish coast. The crew was ordered into two lifeboats before the vessel was torpedoed.
One of the lifeboats, a motorboat, took the other in tow. After approximately 15 hours, the towline broke, and the two boats became separated. After five days adrift in a damaged lifeboat, 11 men reached Arranmore Island, Ireland, on 20 February. The 13 men in the other lifeboat perished. One additional crew member later died from injuries sustained during the ordeal.
